Muslims in Jerusalem

Jerusalem has a long and complex religious history that predates the major Abrahamic faiths. Although its earliest inhabitants practiced Canaanite religion, the city later became the historic and spiritual center of Judaism and today holds profound significance for Christianity and Islam alike. Communities of different faiths have lived here for centuries, shaping the city’s identity and story. As of 2024–2025, Jerusalem’s Muslim population is estimated at about 386,000 people, representing roughly 36.9% of the city’s residents and more than 21% of the total Muslim population in Israel.

Most Muslims live in East Jerusalem, where vibrant neighborhoods continue to sustain daily religious and community life. In the broader demographic landscape of the city, the Jewish population remains the largest group, numbering around 600,000 people (about 61%), while Muslims form the second-largest group at about 37%. The Christian community, though historically significant, numbers only about 15,000 people, roughly 1.5% of the population, alongside a small group of others. Together, these communities form the intricate religious and cultural mosaic that defines Jerusalem today.

For Christians, Jerusalem is the historical and spiritual cradle of their faith. It is the place where the decisive events of salvation unfolded through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, making the city a geographical anchor for the biblical story and a powerful symbol of God’s redemptive work in history, yet it looks like Islam is on the rise. Many believers also look to Jerusalem in light of biblical prophecy, believing it will play a significant role in the future return of the Messiah.
